Top 7 Ways To Get Website Traffic Without Google

by Tom on May 29, 2012

Most people rely on Google to get traffic to their sites.

There is a huge problem in relying on only one source of traffic, it can disappear over night.

The Panda and Penguin updates taught me a lot about how to Google proof a business and I know that lots of people are wondering how to get their lost traffic back and what they have done wrong.

There are many simple and effective ways to get website visitors without having to rely on organic traffic from Google or other search engines. It is good to know that no tactic will work unless you are prepared to provide the best possible value for your visitors.Crap videos and poor content does not work.No one is going to share or recommend your content unless it is entertaining, fun, practical, simple to use, solves a problem…

1.Setup a YouTube account and upload helpful videos!
I know many Internet marketers who make short “how to” videos and upload them to YouTube. They never share all their secrets in these videos, instead there is a link to their website under the video.People visit their sites, sign up for their newsletter, buy one of their products and so on.

2.Start guest posting!
Guesting on someone else´s blog is one of the best ways to get lots of traffic and links back to your own site.Writing for someone else is a “win-win” situation because the blogger gets fresh content and you as the guest author will get website traffic. Before you start writing content for other bloggers, you need to know exactly how it works.

I recommend you read “Bending The Web” by Jack Humphrey. It is the best ebook written on the topic and explains in smallest detail how it works.

3.Post meaningful comments on popular blogs!
Blog commenting still works and I use this tactic regularly. Many people comment only on “do follow” blogs but most blogs these days are “no follow”. You will perhaps not get a live link back to your site but it really does not matter. If you leave a comment that contributes to the discussion and is helpful, you will get traffic to your site.

People are interested to learn more about you and will click through to your site to learn more.No one likes to read “good post” type of comments, or totally irrelevant comments.Provide as much value as possible and this tactic will work for you.By leaving relevant comments on blogs, you can get good ideas for new posts as well.

4.Update your Twitter account automatically every time you publish a new post!
If you have a Twitter account you can set it up in a certain way so it updates automatically every time you publish a new post on your blog. The more followers you have on Twitter, the more traffic you will receive.

5.Get a free Stumbleupon account and start “thumbing up” other peoples stuff!
StumbleUpon allows you to “thumb up or down” other peoples findings and they will do the same for you.You should always stumble other peoples content more than your own.If you only stumble your own stuff, people might think you are selfish.Be sure to fill out your profile and add a link back to your site so people can find your site.

6.Find related forums and help others solve their problems!
Forums and discussion boards are great for getting new ideas and meeting other people. You will get traffic from forums by having a signature file with a link to your site below every post you make. The more helpful information you share and participate in the forums, the more traffic you will get.If you are an Internet marketer, then you should definitely sign up for the Warrior Forum. It is free of charge and the members are very helpful. No one is there to sell anything, but to share information.

7.Build an email list!
Building an email list is perhaps the most effective way you can get people to return to your site after their first visit. Many marketers use an auto responder service called Aweber because it is affordable and reliable.Getting people to sign up for your email list is not difficult if you provide something of high value. It used to be enough just to have subscription form on a visible place but nowadays you need to give people a good reason to sign up and you have on a few seconds to do so.

For best results when it comes to building an email list, I recommend writing your own ebook or special report that is closely related to the theme of your site. The report does not have to be long, it just needs to provide great information. When you get people on your list, please do not send them only advertisements because they will unsubscribe.Provide excellent information and recommend products that are of best quality. This ensures that people will see you as an authority, start buying from you and most importantly recommend you to their friends as well.

8.BONUS
There is another way you can get website traffic without relying on search engines, namely traffic exchanges.I know many people think they are totally useless and in most cases that is true. There is one particular traffic exchange that actually brings results.I recently wrote a post about it which you can read here.

Hi Nage and thanks for commenting! We cannot rely on only one stream of traffic and that´s why we need to look at other options as well.

Hi Arjun! Thanks for commenting.I agree, we need to find alternative paths. It is not a good idea to rely only on Google for traffic. The algorithm changes all the time and makes life difficult for us.

Great Tips and one tip I would also like to suggest, i.e. doing Yahoo Answers on the same category for which your site belongs to. And in return you will get points with which you may able to put link as hyperlink.

I have tried all the ways except email list. They all are very useful and if they are done in a described way then they will really give a handy output.

Posting on forums is the best way to get traffic. I like how you explained it. For my opinion though, forum posting is the one that will get you tons of traffic. This is because you get to converse directly with people unlike in commenting where you have to wait for days and weeks before you even get a reply. Through the signature you use on forums, people will be more than willing to visit your blogs and see if they can learn a lot more from you through your articles. This is a great post overall, thanks for the post!

Forums can be a good source of traffic, but you need to help others find a solution to their problems first and then they will help you in return.Providing as much value as possible is the best way to go.

Good points but I would also like to mention a few more:

- Optimizing your site for other search engines.
- Creating satellite micro sites that target specific keywords and link to your main site.
- Active social media campaigns (especially Facebook). Social media offers a huge potential.
- Constant improvements of your site by means of posting valuable content
- Getting user generated content
