Long tail keywords are really the best to go for because they bring in people who are really interested in what your offering. The more specfic the keyword the more likely that person will be really interested in your site.

I always target long tail keywords, they are a great opportunity to make money. While the competition is low, the keyword gets a lot of searches, especialy the product names (cameras, tv).. Many marketers make a lot of money from these keywords!

Long tail keywords are vital in internet marketing industry because there is less competition which can help you rank on the first page of Google since long tail keywords far easier than ranking for short tail keywords. I read somewhere that not all is capable of ranking highly for a highly competitive keywords but anyone can rank for long tail keywords.

Long tail keywords do not always bring in great quality traffic but the trade off is in quantity of traffic and this generally results in a better monetisation.

it does vary from industry to industry, some places it makes sense to spend all your efforts on the short tail as this really can pay dividends. Long tail is easier and results in a steady traffic stream though and I can see why so many people chase it.
