An image link at the bottom of the article seems to be the most effective means of promoting list signups.

Motivate and reassure people. This is vital and increased my signups by over 25%.

Motivation: People also need to be motivated, does the list contain “latest news”, “site updates” or “special offers”?

Reassurance: Email addresses are never sold or passed on and you agree to only send a certain number of emails in a specified period of time.
