I have recently started using the Google tool over wordtracker, and I find that it greatly overestimates search volume, but otherwise seems very comprehensive. For a free tool, however, you can’t beat it.

Google is accurate. But you need to be aware of some settings.
1) Be aware of the keyword modifiers. Do not use broad match for search volume. Use phrase or exact match. This alone will bring the numbers way down. Exact match will tell you the search volume for that exact keyword. Broad match tells you the search volume for any phrase that contains the keyword and even related keywords.
2) Consider the region of the keyword. Are you searching the world or your local. There are setting for regions.
3) Wordtracker is out to lunch. Its a great tool for long tail ideas, but that is about it.
