How To Identify NoFollow And DoFollow Sites Simple And Easy

by Tom on December 28, 2010

Link building is one of the most important tasks online marketing people need to do in order to get more traffic to their sites and get a better ranking in the search engines.

Many people know that a link needs to be “dofollow” in order to count as a back link, a “nofollow” link is not helpful for link building.A few links from sites that do not follow can be a good thing, because search engines also look at how natural everything looks.Having links from only sites that follow does not look natural.Getting links from both is a better.

“Nofollow” is a value that can be assigned to the rel attribute of the HTML element in websites. The “nofollow” tells search engines that the link should not be followed and should not have any influence towards the search engine ranking for the website. It was invented in order to reduce spam (many websites and blogs are “nofollow” by default). Those who use self hosted WordPress blogs can use a plugin to disable the “nofollow” and other blog platforms have similar options available.

Submitting articles to directories and blog commenting are one of the best ways to get incoming links from sites with higher page rank. The problem is that many sites claim to be “dofollow” but in reality they are not and this leads to a lot of useless work when the time could be better spent on sites that really give a link back.

This video shows a really simple and easy way to identify these two from each other.

As you’ve said in the first paragraph, the key is to make it look natural.A nofollow link from an authority niche sites holds some sort of value in the eyes of the search engines.

Of course, most backlinks should be dofollow to bring juice to your site, but I sometimes comment with a link on nofollow blogs and forums, if I find the topic interesting, I guess it won’t do any harm to my site.
Thank you for providing info about SearchStatus plugin. I’ve installed it on your advice. Before now I’ve been using NoDoFollow plugin and SeoQuake for Firefox — these are also two helpful add-ons I can recommend to everyone.

Most bloggers during their budding phase disable nofollow tags to drive more traffic via commentators.Once they have created sufficient links, they just enable nofollow, thus preventing loss of their pageranks. I have tried to keep my blogs dofollow and have enabled Commentluv plugin, to add value to the conversations and reward people who comment.

Hi Tom, I was hoping you could write a short summary of the video in your post. The internet where I’m at is too slow to load videos and I really want to watch this one because I need to know how to tell dofollow sites from nofollow sites!

Some no follow sites can give much more than the direct increase in PR – traffic which will definitely increase your PR. What I want to say is the following: don’t forget using popular and high PR no follow sites – they can also bring good results (visitors who will tell about your ‘good place’ to others and so on).

You can view the source code of any blog to find whether or not it is nofollow or not. However, I never worry about it. I just comment on blogs I am interested in. Generally after good consistent quality comments/content added to a blog will result in the owner removing the nofollow attribute. If they don’t it only hurts their own rankings because of excessive use of nofollow which triggers on the google algorhythm. I then just move on to another blog that is more considerate and less self-centered. This is the way it is supposed to work anyway, nofollow is not intended to be used across the board.
