How To Give Your Website A Name

by Tom on February 22, 2010

Let´s look at a few tips of how to give your website a name. For “offline” business people, one of the biggest problems is to find a suitable location to setup a business. It has to be a place where there are lots of potential customers and the costs to run the business are not too high.

In the “online” world, setting up a business is a lot quicker and cheaper.Still, there is one big problem: Naming the website. What URL will be the most suitable and bring the most traffic to your website? Should it be a catchy URL that is easy to remember, or a keyword rich URL that helps your website get better rankings in the search engines?

Having a descriptive URL will make it easier for your potential customers to realize that your website can give them what they are looking for.By choosing a catchy enough URL can you rely on the fact that people will remember it and visit your website again?

Personally, I chose a URL that has one of my best keywords in it, “marketing”.I know everything about what my site is about, but my future visitors do not so I am thinking from the visitors point of view. Most of the traffic comes from search engines so it is better to have a website name that gives a hint of what to expect than a website name that does not tell anything.

“TLMarketing.net” tells the visitors that this site is about marketing, when “my-own-website.com” does not.Well known websites like Facebook, Myspace and eBay do not tell what the website is about, but the names are catchy and easy to remember. The URL´s are also easy to type.

Choosing a top level domain name that contains your keyword is also very important when it comes to search engine optimization.Search engines tend to rank websites higher if the keyword is in the domain name.

If you are just starting out and thinking of how to give your website a name, you want to build a brand that is recognizable and easy to remember. It is getting harder and harder to find good domain names, so you might need a dictionary to find a name that suits your business the best.

These were just a few simple tips about how to give your website a name. This video has more useful tips.

Try and keep it within your targeted words or keywords when chosing a domain. Always try and keep it short as well. Very valid points here.

Don’t forget to write out your proposed name as all one word, the way it will be in the URL. Therapist can be read as two words, The R…. and Leads Exchange can be read as three words Lead S….

To follow up with your domain name tips, here are a few things to consider.
1. Target your main keyword as the domain
2. Register .com, .org or .net
3. Check the amount of competition and who it is before choosing domain
How many links will it take you to get into Google top 10 (page 1)
4. Try to keep your URL (domain) name to 20 characters or less (general rule)

just a few ideas, hope it helps. Mike S

Deciding which domain name to go with is a tough decision between using your business name and having a descriptive title. Having keywords in your URL makes SEO easier, but using your business name looks more professional. Plus there will be people who will search for your business name – most websites get the majority of their search engine traffic from brand related search.

Very helpful articles, but if we targeting internet marketing then we should decide such title that includes more keyword in it. Otherwise we should use a simple, sweet and lovely title for our website.

It’s always diffiuclt making a decision on a domain name. It’s so easy to make a big mistake which can’t really come back from. If you don’t have your keywords in your domain you are at a huge disadvantage already

I like to use a keyword tor two in the domain name, however, I would advise you not to box yourself in a corner by using a name of a product or company that is specific to that company. (If it’s not your company) You may want to use the domain to market something different in the future from another company.

Good marketing tips – one thing to consider is how will the domain name be used. If your marketing focus is such that you only expect people to find you through the search engines than 2 – 3 pertinent keywords should normally be used in selecting a name. If on the other hand in your marketing you would expect through verbal communication to often tell a person go to my website at xyz.com than additional consideration should be placed on a name easy to remember that also isn’t likely to be misspelled.

When considering keywords in your website as far as search engine ranking the keywords become much more important in highly competitive markets. So that is certainly something to consider if you’re going after search engine ranking in a highly competitive market.

Good information on picking website names. What I find to be valuable is doing keyword research on what people are looking for in a particular niche. Then based on the number of searches performed and the amount of competition I’ll select a website name that I feel contains the keywords that will give me the “most bang for my buck.”
