Guidelines For Blog Commenting

by Tom on July 30, 2008

Commenting on blogs is an excellent way to get traffic back to your own site and build your own following.

It is good to know that almost all blogs are these days “no follow”, meaning that you will not benefit from the keyword in the name anymore.

Instead of doing blog commenting just for getting a link back to your site, you need to make a comment that is so interesting that others who read the blog will click through to your site.

If you comment on big blogs in your niche, then you will definitely get more targeted traffic to your own site. The blog owner reads all the comments and will “get to know you” is something you will benefit from later if you are thinking of guest posting.

When you make a new comment on a blog, you need to enter your name, your email address and your website address into a form and then you write your comment. If the post is about something you are not so familiar with, go to Google and do some research and go back and leave a comment that is helpful and adds to the post. You are completely wasting your time by commenting something like “nice post” or “good job”. Comments are always moderated and leaving a spammy comment will not be approved and you might be banned from the blog altogether.

There are a few good guidelines to follow in blog commenting:

#1. Comment on relevant blogs to yours. If you are in the internet marketing niche, visit the IM top blogs list for over 300 blogs you can comment on.

#2.Make a comment that is helpful and adds value to the post.No one likes to see “nice blog” or “thanks for sharing” in the comments.

#3.Comment only when you can contribute to the discussion in some way.

#4.Use deep linking. If you have written a post on your own blog that is relevant to the one you are commenting on, point back to it.You might get a few comments on your blog and a few tweets and Facebook likes.

#5.Link building has changed and blog commenting is not useful for building links back to your blog.I know some people only comment on “do follow” blogs that follow links.Personally, I comment on all blogs that are relevant to mine.People will visit you if you post an excellent comment.Blog commenting is about building a following.

With Google you can use many different research strings to find exactly what you are looking for. Here is 11 best killer research strings to find stuff on Google. You can use it to find information and relevant blogs to comment on.

Go through these lists below, read the blogs and make good and useful comments. You will learn lots of new things at the same time and you will see your traffic go up quickly as well.

Stephan Miller from stephanmiller.com wrote an excellent post about the subject and made the ultimate dofollow blog list.

Jack Humphrey from jackhumphrey.com made a list of the best marketing blogs right now. This is a list of 7 marketing blogs and thousands of dollars worth of advice.

Great tips! So many newer bloggers just don’t do this stuff and it really does help drive great traffic!

Tom,
Excellent points about commenting on dofollow blogs.

Many newbies are being told to comment on dofollow blogs, but are not told the proper way to comment. So, if their comment does not follow appropriate guidelines, like yours above, their comment gets deleted.

Point #4 reminds me I need to do more deep linking :-)

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for commenting. Also, from the blog owners point of view, why should he/she approve any comment that does not give any value to the post? Every comment that gives value also brings new and fresh content to the blog.

Thanks, Tom, for nice blog commenting guidelines. I also have a blog and receive many comments for my posts. I like when people give valuable posts and don’t just tell “Thank you, Julia”. I delete almost all comments of such kind. As to the NoFollow and DoFollow blogs, I comment on both. Although NoFollow links are not counted as backlinks (I did a test and verified this by myself), I would not advise anyone to ignore them. NoFollow links can still drive some traffic to the website. BTW. I liked your notice that keywords in the name field are allowed. I met it for the first time. Usually one should review other comments to decide if he/she can include keywords.

Use deeplinking. It’s the smartest thing I started to do. Spread the link love around your blog a bit. Thanks for the link.

Upon searching for backlinking, what is this deeplinking? I’d like to know more about this. Thank you.

Hi Chariz, thanks for commenting.Deep linking is when you link back to a related post on your blog instead of the main page.

Great post! The point of commenting is to add to the topic of conversation. Bloggers love it when visitors leave comments on their blog. It gets the conversation started and people talking back and forth.

Comment spam is so pointless and such a waste of time. It just shows how lazy these type of people are. Writing a decent comment that adds to the discussion only takes a few minutes.

One good consideration is to try to collect a large amount of blogs to make comments on which could be relevant to ONE site, and then try to use this very strategy for all the websites you plan to use for Internet Marketing! Of course, this is AMONGST the ways of attempting to increase traffic, but depending on the degree you take it to, it could be something which ends up making you a sale (at least). :)

Internet Marketing is a very broad topic. Basically you can get paid a certain amount of money for each sale you make of a particular product online (or more).

Great article Tom

This is where many marketers especially new ones fall down. They don’t take the time to build back link to their blogs/websites and wonder why google doesn’t like them.

I enjoyed your and all the other posts. Commenting on blogs is a great way to attract attention to a web site or another blog. However, one of the things I like best about online marketing (in addition making money) is the sense of community. Blog commenting and guest posting is a nice way to get to know other online marketers or social networkers who have similar interests.

Thanks and best regards!

Hi Sophie, blog commenting is a fantastic way to get links back but you need to write a meaningful comment and not just something like “nice post” or similar.Comments are often manually approved by the blog owner and bad comments do not get through anyway. It is worth the effort to read the post first and leave a good comment.

I find it very correct to write “name” at “keyword” as the name which will bring the benefits as a link building strategy. Personally I start to do blog commenting as a strategy to get one way links pointing to my site. I want to see if this kind of links really helpt to increase the position of the site in search engines.

I don’t really care about commenting on only dofollow blogs. I want to make the process really natural in the eyes of Google. If I promote my site and point only dofollow links to my site that is not looking that natural to me.

I think this is so important, and all new webmasters and SEOs should take note. While it is understandable that we would like our efforts to help promote our sites, we have to remember that the website that we “spam” blatantly, in order to get a keyworded link for “cheap gym shoes”(for example), is another person’s business or hobby.

We should strive to treat other websites as we would hope ours will be treated, and that when we wish to add our link to a website, it should be in the context of adding some degree of value, with a thought-out and sincere comment.

Hi Tom,

It’s a short and nice blog post. I wonder if you can tell me how we can tell whether a blog is NoFollow or DoFollow. Isn’t it going to be tedious to find this out before posting? Or is there a software that people are using with such features? I have not tried the software you posted here yet.

Another advice I want to seek from you. Do you think Blog Commenting should be outsourced?

Reply

Tom January 21, 2011 at 6:49 am

Hi Henry, thanks for commenting. It is hard to see if a website is nofollow or dofollow without some help.I use a FireFox addon called “Search Status”.Blog commenting can be outsourced but I want to do it myself because there is so much to learn from other bloggers and the comment you leave on a blog has to be of high standard. There is no point in adding a comment like “nice post” or similar. It does not bring any value or add to the discussion.Bad comments get seldom approved and it is a great idea to read through the post before commenting, this way you can really add a helpful comment that will be approved.
