Effective Decision Making In Business

by Tom on October 22, 2007

Effective decision making is an important task that will enable an business organization to function properly but it is inevitable that some managers may find this task quite daunting because the success of the organization relies on them.

They will also encounter the fear of making the wrong decision because so much is at stake. You might wonder though why some managers seem to take the task of decision-making easily and comfortably.

In line with this, it is important to realize that these managers know the real importance of decision-making and they have realized a few facts about it.

You can understand these concepts too and make effective decisions yourself. When you are working at home with internet marketing, making the right decisions is not always the easiest thing to do.

The first thing you need to realize in effective decision-making is that there is always no right or wrong answer. You might be looking back at the past and thinking that you have made the wrong decision.

But you need to put things into perspective. Decision is in itself, a choice between two or more alternatives, every choice is correct; you just need to find the best solution.

The next thing you need to realize is that it is never recommended for you to make instant decisions. This is because you need to do an extensive amount of research in each alternative and weigh the criteria before making any decision. Sometimes though, it is inevitable that you will encounter situations where fast decisions need to be made. In this case, you still need have an idea about the things you should do before making a choice.

It is also recommended for you to use the SWOT analysis that is the strength, weakness, opportunity, and threats of each of the alternative solution. You can write each of these alternatives down and understand its impact on you, the people around you, and the organization to come to the most viable alternative.

Then to avoid feeling pressured, you should also make decisions as they come. Do not let the tasks and the paperwork pile up before you decide to tackle everything at once. This is because you will feel stressed and pressured when a lot of things need to be done simultaneously. Thus, your sense of judgment may become clouded and it is possible for you to make decisions you might later regret.

Still another tip for you to make effective decisions is to consult with other people especially the people who will be affected by your decisions.

This will enable you to have a clearer perspective of the impact your decision will have on the people around you.

If you are in the lucky position that you are working at home for your self, you are in charge of every decision.

When you have made a decision make sure that you stick to it! It is important to show your subordinates that you know what you are doing. Being committed will also enable you to avoid thinking about the ifs and the buts of alternative decisions.

Thank you for underscoring the need to weigh criteria in a decision. One of the fallacies of a pro/con list is failing to realize or remember that all criteria are not equal. A dozen pros on one side of a decision chart become less impressive if one of the cons is “I could die in the process.”

Decision making is a very crucial part of starting a business. It is really important that before you start there are plans that you think can help you to succeed. It is a process you should consider and that you cannot achieve everything in just one plan. In every project you should really have plan A, plan B, and even plan C to have choices if others are impossible.

Today, in our busy and advanced society, time has become the most invaluable resource of all, it is not always right to ask beyond the whats and whens as it usually takes up sometime to explain the hows and whys. It would be asking too much when you demand an answer of which others may find difficult to answer in a digestible manner. It goes a long way, when such query prolongs the time needed to engage and hence makes up loses upon another persons’ time. Remember no one owes you anything, you should seek technical answers at your own pace or make an appointment with the person of whom you might want to consult. No one likes to be hoaxed suddenly into a series of never ending questions and answering session.

Decision making is very difficult especially if you only have limited time to think of what is good in your business. There should be a a feasibility study in every plan you have to assure it’s effectiveness. Business does not succeed in just a decision. It is planned and researched beforehand.

Great tips! If you have a full understanding of your business, effective decision making would not be that hard at all. Every decision will lie in your hands and you will be able to determine which one will be good for you and your business if only you have known all the aspects that may be affected by your decision. We cannot just apply the decision we made a month ago with the same problem without thorough review again. There might some factors that will be added or will be deleted to the list. Anyway, thanks for he information you’ve shared. It’s worth stopping by.

Awesome one Tom! The tips you shared is so real and great. Decision making is critical thing to do in one’s life. Wow, good to hear that SWOT can be applied too in Business setting. Well, I remember during my college days we used SWOT when we do community outreach and immersion. Indeed, it is such a big help to us. By using SWOT we can evaluate the goals, identify the strength, weakness and threats. Thanks you Tom for posting this. ’til next time!

Most important is taking action. Take all available information, consider the top options and go with one or all. Realizing that most likely, decisions made will need revisions and updates as more experience from the task at hand is gained.
