8 Essential Blogging Rules

by Tom on March 1, 2010

Many people start their own blog, or several, but they really don t understand what it really takes if they want to earn an income from it.Here are 8 essential blogging rules as I see them.

1.If you start blogging you cannot stop, at least if you have a lot of people reading your blog.Your visitors expect to see a new blog post regularly. It is important to have some kind of schedule when your visitors can expect to see fresh content on your blog.Personally, I try to blog everyday. There are times when I skip a day or two, but this happens only when I am away and don´t have my laptop with me.

2.If people comment on a blog post, be sure to respond, or at least say thanks for commenting.Blogging is interactive and if you get comments on a blog post you are also getting fresh content automatically and possibly ideas for future posts.

3.Blogging takes time. There is a lot of research to do and then writing the post. For me, blogging is a full time job these days and not just a hobby anymore.

4.Play by the rules.Be sure to have a privacy policy and follow the new FTC guidelines.

5.Take notes of new blogging ideas, there will always be shortage of great blog post ideas.I use a simple notepad file where I write down ideas for future posts.I get these ideas when I visit forums and other blogs.

6.Link out to other blogs. Many people are afraid that linking out to other blogs will hurt their PR (page rank), it will not.Just make sure you link out to blogs that are in the same niche as your own blog.If you link to affiliate products then you should “nofollow” the link.

7.Start a blog about something you enjoy and know about. There is no point in blogging about knitting patterns if you have no interest in it.Remember that a successful blog takes years to build, so it is essential you have an interest in what you write about.

8.Don´t expect to get 15,000 visitors to your blog the first month.Be patient, the readership grows over time.

I think the key here is the relativity of your content and the way you engage your audience. I think you make some great points about it taking time. So many people today are looking for a quick fix and don’t understand the process behind good blogging.

just want to add my 2 cents here too, the most important part is to build a relationship. I think thats where everyone forgets when it comes to blogging. Blogging does take up a lot of time and it is not easy if you have the starting mindset of making money. You start off without anything, build up readership and then think about monetizing it sooner than later. Problogger didn’t become famous overnight and im sure there’s something you can learn from lots of bloggers out there.

The points are really considerable. It is good if you write 1 post daily. This is a nice idea to keep your blog updated & it is not too difficult.

One tip that I heard from Eben Pagan is to write like you are talking to one friend. Casual and directed at ONE person. Add you personality in there too. yo.

Online Marketing Blog receives the majority of it’s traffic from search engines.Blog software with category features allows the aggregation of content according to themes. This makes it easier to algorithmically categorize content. If you can make it easier for search engines to understand your content, you have a much better chance of ranking well on those topics.

I would add to the comment by Jamie. Build a relationship with the people who read your blog. Talk to them individually rather than as group.

I agree with most on this one that it is really about creating a relationship with your readers. Your readers want to know you and what kind of person you are before they will think about buying anything from you. I think adding quality content over time will not only help you gain trusting readers but also help you in the search engines and beyond.

I usually don’t add nofollow when linking to my affiliate sites but i’ll start doing that now

Except you freelancing some of your blogging tasks to people, blogging is more than a day’s job especially when you have more than one primary blog. No wonder my sister is a loyal fan of website instead of blog but i just love the flexibility of blogs, especially when you use self hosted blog which is the way to go, you have plugins for almost any thing you want to add to your site

The rate at which blogs need regular updates can be scary especially when you are just starting out. But to make it easier settle for something you can easily write about, it helps alot. Apart from visiting blogs just to build links, you should do it more to get ideas for future articles. Please and please don’t be a copy cat. But before commenting on peoples blogs take the time to read through the entire post, you might find that you have lots of things to add on that subject, that you can put in an article. Quickly write the article and link to that post where you got the idea. I read an article recently that i know i can add more information to, so i quickly put an article together and linked to the blog, see how i did it with the article Do You Fall For Online Money Making Traps?

I like your tip especially that line where you said that grow a successful blog needs time. Yes we should not expect a lot just very first month of our blog. Try to write quality content. And don’t cry for money, money will cry to be in your pocket one day

Building a great blog does take years, patience is needed and a lot of time writing and commenting on other blogs, it can be hard at times but ultimately its worth it.
