How To Give Your Website A Name

ADVERTISEMENTS

by Tom

For “offline” business people, one of the biggest problems is to find a suitable location to setup a business. It has to be a place where there are lots of potential customers and the costs to run the business are not too high.

In the “online” world, setting up a business is a lot quicker and cheaper.Still, there is one big problem: [Tag-Tec]Naming the website[/Tag-Tec]. What URL will be the most suitable and bring the most traffic to your website? Should it be a catchy URL that is easy to remember, or a keyword rich URL that helps your website get better rankings in the search engines?

Having a descriptive URL will make it easier for your potential customers to realize that your website can give them what they are looking for.By choosing a catchy enough URL can you rely on the fact that people will remember it and visit your website again?

Personally, I chose a URL that has one of my best keywords in it, “marketing”.I know everything about what my site is about, but my future visitors do not so I am thinking from the visitors point of view. Most of the traffic comes from search engines so it is better to have a website name that gives a hint of what to expect than a website name that does not tell anything.

“TLMarketing.net” tells the visitors that this site is about marketing, when “my-own-website.com” does not.Well known websites like Facebook, Myspace and eBay do not tell what the website is about, but the names are catchy and easy to remember. The URL´s are also easy to type.

If you are just starting out and thinking of a website name, you want to build a brand that is recognizable and easy to remember. It is getting harder and harder to find good domain names, so you might need a dictionary to find a name that suits your business the best.

Try and keep it within your targeted words or keywords when chosing a domain. Always try and keep it short as well. Very valid points here.

Don’t forget to write out your proposed name as all one word, the way it will be in the URL. Therapist can be read as two words, The R…. and Leads Exchange can be read as three words Lead S….

To follow up with your domain name tips, here are a few things to consider.
1. Target your main keyword as the domain
2. Register .com, .org or .net
3. Check the amount of competition and who it is before choosing domain
How many links will it take you to get into Google top 10 (page 1)
4. Try to keep your URL (domain) name to 20 characters or less (general rule)

just a few ideas, hope it helps. Mike S

Deciding which domain name to go with is a tough decision between using your business name and having a descriptive title. Having keywords in your URL makes SEO easier, but using your business name looks more professional. Plus there will be people who will search for your business name – most websites get the majority of their search engine traffic from brand related search.

Very helpful articles, but if we targeting internet marketing then we should decide such title that includes more keyword in it. Otherwise we should use a simple, sweet and lovely title for our website.
