The internet is a highly competitive industry regardless of what niche you are in. And to tell you the truth, it is only getting tougher with more and more people turning to the internet to start their own business. Because of this, if you want to have success online you have to become an authority in your niche.
[Tag-Tec]Becoming an authority[/Tag-Tec] in your niche is not a walk in the park, but there are some things you can do to give yourself a better chance. First, select a niche that is not already extremely competitive. There are certain niches that are impossible to have too much success in because of what you will be going up against. Try to pick a narrow niche such as selling basketball caps instead of basketball clothing in general.
If you already have a niche you are in, the next thing to do is make yourself known. There is nothing more powerful than getting out on the internet and making a name for you and your business. This means posting in forums and blogs every day multiple times. The more familiar people become with your name, the better chance you have of them remembering it down the road.
When you go to these forums and niches, bring up topics that you have not seen touched on before. It is common for entrepreneurs to touch on the same topics over and over. This becomes repetitive and boring, resulting in many bloggers completely ignoring the comments. But if you have come up with fresh and enticing information, people will be interested to see what else you have to say.
Becoming an authority in your niche requires you to open up and express yourself. Try to get away from the small business owner mindset and think like a normal human being. Be open to other people

You are quite right, more and more people including myself have realized how cool and wonderful it could be to work from home and become our own boss.
But internet marketing has become too way very competitive and the only way to succeed is to not only choose a profitable niche but also to become an authority in it.
Becoming an authority of course takes time and effort.
There is so much info out there on picking a niche… everyone who is anyone talks about finding your niche being the key to success on the internet. It’s true, it’s hard work, but then you’re not exactly being employed by anyone who tells you what to do. You have to learn, be committed and put in the time to build yourself as an authority in your niche. I’m happy to say that I’m still learning and it’s a great experience!

You are right to an extent, but look at the bigger picture, because there is one!
I fear we have become obsessed with “niche marketing” as the only way to succeed on the internet. I’ve fallen for that myth as well.
Think of all the successful social networking and bookmarking sites, for example. We use those as part of setting ourselves up as “authorities”, yet none of those founders are “authorities in their niche”. What about price comparison sites? What about Clickbank? What about Dictionary.com? What about people who trade in web domains? What about people who buy and sell websites? What about basic eBay selling?
There are hundreds of business models available! Being an “Authority in a niche” is just one of them.
And another thing. There’s another factor that’s limiting the success of most internet marketers…
But I feel a blog post coming on – so I’ll save that point for my post!
Thanks for the opportunity to rant a bit!

Thanks for commenting. As Alex pointed out, there are hundreds of business models available with niche marketing one of them.He is quite right about that.
In having authority, first, you have to establish yourself slowly. Getting preeminence and affiliating to people known in the same industry or perhaps in a related industry is one way to get a recommendation from them. One you have these components, it will be easier to expand to other things like driving traffic to your site, giving out quality newsletters and constant communication with your readers. -From your Life Coach
