Pinterest—it’s one of the hottest social media/bookmarking sites to hit the internet since Facebook. In fact Pinterest, which is a digital pin board designed to artistically display a user’s likes and “interests” through aesthetically pleasing “pins” or photos, gained more than 10 million American users within its first couple of months—making it the only website in history to grow at such an exponential rate, according to Tech Crunch.
While initially the site may seem like it’s just an outlet for users to post a bunch of pretty photos, it can be an online marketer’s haven. To learn how so, continue reading below.
1. Added Links, Increase SEO Rankings
Like mentioned earlier, Pinterest’s popularity exploded at a very fast rate. This means there are tons and tons of users who are browsing the site’s database of “pins” to post on their profile. These pins can be categorized into self-made tabs such “must-have” and “likes.” While it’s great because those looking to buy a friend a birthday gift for example can just look into one of his or her tabs, what really makes the design of Pinterest so marketer-friendly is that each pin/image has an attached link that leads to the original source/ website of the product.
This means that if a user wants the entire outfit or just the blouse that he or she posts, he or she can easily locate where to purchase the product. A user can also share images with other Pinterest account users, which means potentially more traffic and higher sales for your business or for your client’s. Pinterest images also get filed through Google and since links lead back to your website, this means that you can potentially increase your Google Search Rankings with very little effort—users do all the work if they continue to share or post your image.
2. Aggregates with the Most Dominating Social Media Sites
Pinterest may be a newbie and requires those interested to request an invite to register first, but it’s made sure to join forces with its strongest competitors, the top two original social media sites Facebook and Twitter. Pinterest allows users to simultaneously share and post their pins on Facebook and Twitter, which means that even those without a Pinterest account can see your product. And since images are more attractive to see than a long, drawn-out status or tweet, the pin is more likely to get attention from the user’s friends and followers. This means that one pin can go viral and your product can reach an even bigger consumer audience, again, with little or no effort.
3. Insight to Audience’s Likes, Dislikes
Lastly, Pinterest is a great outlet for marketers to get in-tune and up to date with industry trends. It can give you better insight to what’s hot (and what’s not) and can let you know where you need to be focusing your attention on. Following your customers is a great way to know exactly what they are looking for and then you can tailor marketing techniques to better fit to their needs.

I love Pinterest, it’s like a FB/Tumblr/Flckr/StumbleUpon hybrid and it’s really quick to build up a group of virtual contacts fast.
Angelita, thank you for the interesting and insightful article. I’ve just received the Invitation to Pinterest and going to register here, cause it’s really popular and one more effective way to promote your blog, portfolio or website.

It is my first time to know about the Pinterest. Thanks for sharing it. I ca picture it out because it is somewhat the same as Facebook… It can’t be denied that social networks become more popular because of the features of like or dislike button since it will help readers to have at least an idea where to read or focus more. God bless

Great post. I think you nailed it when you said, “Though Pinterest isn’t going to be equally beneficial for all businesses, it is and has already proven to be an useful tool for certain big and small businesses.”
It’s not going to work for everyone, but it’s certainly work paying attention to.
