Track Backs can be an amazing feature to your WordPress blog that you should include. The information in this article will help you understand what a track back is, how to create one, how to send one, and how to make sure that it was successfully sent.
Before getting into the specifics, let us go over exactly what track backs are. Track backs are a way for you to notify a web site when you have published an entry that references it. After sending the track back, they will receive a short excerpt of your entry that appears on the referenced web site.
In order to create a track back, you will need to use a special link that is provided on the blog you want to reference. Typically you will want it to appear after the blog post content has been submitted and right before the comments so people can see it clearly before the comments. You can make the track back either in regular text or you can bold it or hyperlink it to make it stand out.
The next step to the process is actually sending the track back. In order to do this, you will need to tell WordPress to send your track back notices prior to publishing the blog entry. Then, paste the URLs into the box next to the “Send Track Backs To.” You can add multiple URL’s to make sure you reference everything you need to. Once you have referenced all of the URL’s needed, the blogs will be notified when you hit the publish button.
Simply sending the track backs is not good enough; you want to make sure you have successfully sent them and the blogs have received them. In order to make sure they have been successfully sent, usually they will appear within moments of publishing your blog entry.
You can also verify that they were successfully sent by clicking EDIT next to the blog entry you published and then scrolling down below the Custom Fields. WordPress will display all of the URL’s that have been notified about your blog entry for you.
If you plan on having a majority of your blog posts including track backs, you may want to enable this feature on your blog. From your admin file, click on Options and Discussion. Then place a check mark next to “Allow link notifications from other Weblogs. Lastly, remember to click on update options when you are finished.
If you are not familiar with the term track backs, it is something you will want to familiarize yourself with for WordPress blogs. It can be a great tool to help you build links and traffic to your blog. In addition, it can help you build relationships with other bloggers all over the internet.
