7 Ways To Make People Click On Your Banner Ads

January 22, 2009 by Tom Lindstrom · 5 Comments

The most common banner ad is a 468×60 horizontal advertising (often blinking) that is placed on a visible place on a site to grab attention to make people click.

These affiliate banners are often ineffective because people know that a banner is just an advertisement for an affiliate program or product and are used to avoid them, and will not click on the banner ad under any circumstance.

If you must have banner ads on your site, you might as well get people to click on them and use another size than the standard 468×60.Smaller ads take up less space on your site and blends in much better with the content on your site. Many sites use 125×125 and 300×250 squares in the sidebar of the site and have found it to be very effective.

Be careful not to have too many banners on your site, it will only confuse the visitors and make your site look cheap and ugly. The visitors come to your site to look for information and the banners must be closely related to the content to complement it.If your banner ads are unrelated to the content, no one will click on the banners and they will just use valuable space on your site.

There are a few ways you can make your banner ads effective so people will click on them. This is only true if you design your own banners, in many cases you are not allowed to edit the ready made banners you get from the company you are affiliated with.To find a free banner ad design service, just go to Google and type in “design banner ads”.

7 Ways to make people click on your banner ads:

  • 1.Use reverse psychology.Tell people NOT to click on your banner ad.
  • 2.Use attractive words like free, powerful and hot.
  • 3.Offer a strong guarantee on your banner ad.
  • 4.Advertise a trial offer on your banner ad.
  • 5.Offer a 75% discount on your banner ad.
  • 6.Use a testimonial on your banner ad.
  • 7.Offer something for free when clicking on the banner ad.

I never thought that banners are avoided by visitors. I’ll trust you on this and remove some of the banners I have on my blogs. Why, in the world do they still create one if it doesn’t work? I’m getting confused = (

  2. Hi Anne, thanks for stopping by.It is also called “banner blindness” when people just ignore the banners and donĀ“t click on them because they know it is an advertisement.

If you run a blog where you use thumbnails to your messages you can deploy its afilliate link.
Many users frequently click on thumbnail images to get to the article, and it can usefully be exploited in this way. Just be aware that the link opens in a new window so the user does not “miss” your article.

In addition, it also depends on what you really want with your users …. Do you want them to read your articles, or do you want to earn money on afilliate contracts. For it is believed that some of the users who click on such a link must be described as lost, as many of them will no longer be interested in reading your article.

Just a smart way to get higher CTR. :-)

  4. Hey Gratisspil, thanks for commenting! Good tips, thanks for sharing.I guess every serious blogger wants to get people to read their content so they can recommend their products.Linking to affiliate products from the content is used by a lot of people and it seems to be working a lot better than banners.
