What Makes A Strong Password

January 15, 2009 by Tom Lindstrom · 1 Comment

Creating a strong password is the key to keep your information safe online. If criminals had access to your information, they could for instance apply for a bank loan in your name or open new credit card accounts in your name and do a lot of damage.Your life would become very difficult if your personal information would be stolen, and you would not notice anything before it is too late to do anything about it.The only way you can protect your self is by having strong passwords.

What is a strong password? It is a random string of 8 characters or more.An ideal password has 14 characters or more.

The basic rule is that someone else should never be able to guess your password, use words and phrases that are easy for you to remember, but impossible for others to guess.Combine numbers, letters and symbols to have a greater variety of characters.A password should also be changed periodically.

How to create a strong password:
1.The basis of a strong password is a phrase or sentence that you will remember, such as “the color of my leather sofa is black”.

2.If your computer supports pass phrases directly, use a pass phrase with spaces between the words. If not, convert it in to a password. The above pass phrase would become “tcomlsib”, the first character of each word, or use the last character of each word, the second…

3.Make the password more complex by adding numbers, special characters, mixing uppercase and lowercase letters. The longer the sentence becomes, the more difficult it is to break.

What to avoid:
Avoid using any part of your login name in your password, dictionary words, sequences or repeat characters. As a matter of fact, even using no password at all (Windows XP supports no password) is more safe than using “abcd” or “1234″ as a password that can be easily guessed by hackers.

Do not share your passwords with anyone, not even family members.

Avoid fraud. If you are asked for your password in an email or are asked to verify your password in a web form, this is called “phishing” and is a form of online fraud.

Internet marketers often have dozens of passwords to different sites. There are social media sites, email accounts, PayPal, Clickbank, traffic exchanges, server login, affiliate back office, and so on.You should have a different password for each site, but with this amount of different sites it is really difficult to manage all the passwords. Some marketers can have over 100 passwords. There is a fantastic password management solution that most of the top internet marketers use to manage all their passwords. It is called Roboform.

Roboform is a free automated password manager and form filler that memorizes all your passwords and allows you to login automatically.Roboform also generates random passwords that hackers cannot guess and encrypts all your passwords to achieve complete security.
