How To Deal With Home Business Distractions

Distractions can sink your home business if you are not careful. If you are working at home with your own home business, you have better chances to become successful if you learn to focus on your marketing task at hand and close your eyes and ears from everything else.Easier said than done, I know. Nevertheless, it is your work and you need to focus 100% on what you are doing or you can close shop and give up.
When working for someone else outside the home there will most likely not be distractions like a television you can watch whenever you feel like it, or take breaks all the time for whatever reason. There might be a radio available, and it is probably playing in the background causing no distraction to your ability to get your work done in time.
Your work outside the home probably is not constantly interrupted by a spouse or child, unless you have a really tolerant boss and from your desk you most likely cannot see dirty dishes in the sink, or a pile of laundry that needs done and will not notice the grass has grown in the past few days and needs cut again. While working at home does have many advantages, it is also rife with distractions that can take the focus off of the task at end and toss a torpedo into the heart of your work world.
The first few months, not days or weeks, but months of working at home are going to be filled with distractions, especially if you have a spouse that works outside the home. It will take them some time to realize that yes, you are at home all day but you are working and no, you do not have time to run the vacuum cleaner no matter who is expected to arrive for dinner.
If you want to do this while taking a break or having lunch, that is OK, but putting your work aside to take care of a household chore can set a dangerous precedent for the future. You need to learn how to say no, at least during “office hours”.
Establishing a work schedule is a must for any business owner and even more important when running a home business. Even if you seldom see any customers or clients in your home office, you still have to maintain a semblance of professionalism. The idea of sleeping in and sitting down at your desk at the crack of noon in your favorite pajamas or sweat pants may be inviting, but it does little to improve your self-discipline. Besides, there may be something on television you want to watch that night and nothing will get done in your business.
When you accept work from clients you are making them a promise that it will be done in a timely manner. Some of the most successful home business operators still set their alarm clock, get up, get dressed and go to work at the same time every day. This will set the personal tone for your business and will lead to a better chance of success.Getting dressed for work makes me feel better about my self and I will get more done.Running a home business in a pajamas does not feel good to me.
If you allow all the little household chores to come between you and your work, the house may be spotless – especially for the next occupants after you get kicked out for not being able to pay the rent or mortgage. So, dealing with home business distractions is something that needs to be taken seriously.

Many bosses don’t like people working from home, but I don’t think distractions like the ones you’re telling are the reason. Here in the office many of my colleagues are always distracted. There’s YouTube, and also for them it takes more than half an hour having a coffee.
We all should consider that working from home, this is, no car, no oil being spent, no smoke to the sky, is one of our means to save the planet.
Hi gtd, good points! I agree that it would be much less pollution if more people would work at home.
This is why its important to have an office at home where there is no TV or anything else that could act as a distraction, just you and your computer (and hopefully some peace and quite).
Having a home business means that you’re your own boss, there’ll be no one gives you instructions. That’s also why discipline and commitments are critical in this line of business.
Great post, Tom, thanks for sharing:)
Hi Lily, thanks for commenting. It´s very rewarding to have a home business. It does take a lot of discipline to make it work.It is too easy to sit back and relax.
You blog entry surely was one of the best points of my Saturday. I was on MSN searching for something totally unrelated when the title caught my attention. I’m glad I took the time to read your blog!
