I guess until we don’t have a reliable metrics in place we will have to somehow trust Alexa rankings. Atleast there is way through which we can measure the performance of various websites around the world.

They aren’t that reliable. But that can be used to your advantage, if you like, since a lot of ad companies base prices for ads on the number. I can just tell you that I rank pretty high with Alexa now for two sites and neither of the numbers are right, unless a lot of people at the same Alexa level are lying about their page views.
