What Is A Podcast?

August 7, 2008 by Tom Lindstrom

Have you ever wondered what a podcast is, how you can use one, and why you would even want to bother learning about it? If this is you, you are not the only one in the world unfamiliar with the continuous development in technology. However, it can be extremely beneficial to you to learn what this term means.

Podcasting is essentially a combination of the terms broadcasting and iPod.As you probably are familiar with, iPod is a portable music player that has put Apple on top of the charts.Lucky for them, they have also been able to put their product within a new term like podcasting.

While there are many different forms of podcasts, MP3 is the most popular format used.An MP3 is a popular digital audio encoding and compression format. The reason this was created was to reduce the amount of data that is required to represent audio. It is most widely referred to with music recordings or files of sound that are stored on the computer.

In brief, podcasting is a form of audio broadcasting on the internet. It became linked to iPods because many people download their music on the internet and upload it onto their iPods. But you certainly do not have to have an iPod to listen to podcasting. It is just a term that has stuck since its creation.

By now you are probably asking what makes it different from just searching and downloading a music file and then listening to it.The main difference is having the files come to you through syndication and RSS feeds as oppose to you going to the files through search.

This makes it far easier and quicker for you to attain the music that you are looking for. What you do is sign up for podcasts like you would for a blog. Then, you have access to do with the file what you choose to.

Many people opt to put it on their portable device so they can listen to the music elsewhere. Some podcast reading software will configure the download and transfer the podcast directly to your portable device saving you even more time.

Podcasting is essentially the start of a new media content revolution that is fueling people to distribute their ideas. It has already begun to impact the journalism, education and entertainment worlds by allowing anyone to create and distribute news and media.

And podcasting is just the start as video casting is gradually beginning to take the internet by storm as well. The future looks bright for the internet and technology.

    Hey,

Thanks for the post here. I am soooo far behind the curve here that I actually thought that you, generally, had to have an iPod to listed to podcasts! Well, outside of software hacks. Sheesh.
