Many people are dreaming of starting their own home business and beginning work at home career, but for many this dream turns quickly into a nightmare because of the high expectations that are often not tied to the reality in any way. When the reality of operating a home business sets in, they will most likely become discouraged and some may even quit.
On the other hand, going into business for yourself without all the hype of the kind of freedom and riches that will fall in your lap can help you create a successful work at home business in time.
There are certain realities that you must face no matter what type of business you plan to open. You will work long hours at least in the beginning when setting up your home business,so the free time will be at minimum.Ignore the hype about only having to work a couple of hours a day. Part time work rarely results in full time pay and the notion of pulling in obscene riches working at home is a dream only realized by a few individuals, who are not likely to share any proprietary information with you or anyone else. They have learned the hard way, and think that it is only fair you go the same way.
Working at a home business has to be considered as a job, and like any type of job you have to put in a certain amount of effort. With home businesses, the more effort you put in the bigger rewards are available, but believing that you can start your home business and instantly start earning the big bucks is the kind of unrealistic thinking that quickly causes a lack of sleep and when sleep does come, it is interrupted by nightmare. What the majority of all business opportunities forget to tell you is that you need to market your business to earn money.
Now that you understand that instant riches are not going to come from running your home business, you also need to understand that like all jobs it is going to require work. No matter what type of home business you plan to operate, chances are you are not going to be able to afford a full staff to do everything for you. At least in the beginning, if there is something to do, you are going to be in charge of getting it done. There is no advertising staff, no accounting staff, no billing and certainly no cleaning crew. It is all on you.
So much for having all that free time. Many people who quit their jobs on the basis of living the dream of owning their own business do not fully comprehend what it takes to earn a living working from home. Amid the constant interruptions of family and friends, the clients or customers that are demanding your time and the self-set deadlines to get things done will quickly take a toll on your patience.
Then there is the collections department, in charge of making sure your services or products are paid for on time. Yep. You are the only one there as well and threatening calls to a client to pay up will probably lead to the loss of a customer. In some cases that may actually be a good thing, but many home business owners find that a little diplomacy can go a long way to inflate the checking account.

I started my web design firm 1 year ago while also keeping my job at a radio station. I face most of the issues you mention here: constant exhaustion, not being able to be with my family too much, being affected in my work by some problems in the family etc.
The good thing is that I didn’t set a huge goal for my small business since I knew I have to start low. Not having huge expectations and working myself blind were enough to make it work and even see a future. But it’s very hard.
I set out to start my home business (yes, websites and blogs) in November. It has been a constant struggle and battle, but it feels good when you see even the smallest results from the hard work.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither can your home business regardless of style.
Excellent post!
cheers

Ramona ,just keep at it.Market your business at every opportunity.Don“t give up, it is the only way you can fail.
Scott, thanks for commenting! Constant effort is all it takes. You will see your income increasing month after month. Not much at the time, but little by little until it can replace your current job income.
I think the key is, for me at least, making sure my efforts are put in the right place.
I have a few different concepts, and with each passing month I am seeing what is and isn’t working.
Hopefully within a year, I can have a firm grasp on exactly how I want to tackle the giant leap from being employed to employing myself.
Cheers
It does take time and effort to build a successful business on the internet but its better than working for a fixed income.
