How Much Office Space Does Your Home Business Need?

By Tom | Apr 5, 2008

Before jumping right into a home business, it is a good idea to determine how much space your home business really needs. How much available space do you have in your home that you can dedicate to your business? Many home businesses can get by with very little space, especially those working on the internet.

My personal “office” is my laptop with wireless internet connection, that is all I need to run my business successfully, separate office space is not needed in my case. Many internet entrepreneurs work this way.

It is a very flexible way to work, as you can take care of your business practically anywhere you like. You can run a world wide business with a laptop and wireless internet connection practically from anywhere you like.

On the other hand, if you have a separate office space you do not want it to be so cluttered with your business equipment and supplies that there is not enough room to change your mind. Many people really like to spread out while they work and others are happy with just enough space to hold what they need, but whichever personality you have, the space needs to be neat, clean and organized.

You do not always have to settle for the smallest room in the house if you are planning to isolate your office from the rest of the house, nor should you chase everyone out of the family room so you can have a bigger desk and way more file cabinets than you will ever use. Get out your pencil, paper and measuring tape and make a drawing of what your ideal home office space should look like and then adjust it to fit into the available area of the house.

It is never a good idea to use the kitchen table as your home office desk, but if you have to use the kitchen, find another table that fits so you don’t end up with food stains on your work.

A typical office needs a desk about four-feet long along with a chair to be able to work comfortably in your .You will off course need a computer with internet access and a printer, fax machine, a shredder and the typical office supplies. A single filing cabinet for your record keeping may also have a top large enough to hold your computer’s printer, fax machine or other type of office equipment, requiring no additional floor space.

An important thing many home business owners forget to do is having a back up system for their computer. A separate USB-hard drive is the easiest way to make a back up of your important documents just in case something happens with your computer.

Take a back up regularly and keep this hard drive on a secure place away from your office in case of a fire or some other major disaster that can ruin your business. You will never know when something unexpected happens with your home business and it is good to be prepared.

It depends on what you are selling. If you are selling tangible products like DVDs you will need somewhere to store those items ready to be shipped out.

Don’t forget that how much space you use in your home also affects how much you can attribute as a business expense.
