You need targeted traffic to your blog.Build links by joining sites like Blogcatalog, Mybloglog, Squidoo and others. Submit your blog and start building your network.Submit your RSS feed and blog URL to blog directories and search engines in your niche.Make contact to related bloggers by using the social networking services, forums and discussion threads to connect with other bloggers.

5.Monetizing Your Blog:
A lot of people like to earn money from their blogs.The monetizing should not be the main purpose of blogging, rather it should be a result from writing good content that people like to read.You can monetize a blog in many ways, but Google Adsense is probably one of the most common ways to do this.
You will display adsense ads on your blog that are related to the content of your blog.Every time someone clicks on an add, you will earn money.Having excellent content on your blog is essential.
6.Post Regularly:
Depending of the niche you are in, you should post regularly.Unique, interesting, problem solving articles are always appreciated.Some blogs are updated several times per day, while others are updated 3 times per week.The point here is consistency.If you blog regularly, search engines will take notice of you and start ranking your blog higher.

I cannot agree more with you on the hosting your own blog part. If you are serious about getting into blogging - never use a free service. Why put in a lot of hard work gaining a good reputation, getting a good following only to find that the free service has gone and changed the rules. Transferring a successful blog to self hosting is very hard work and you wont get to transfer any of the built up rankings.
My advice to all - start by hosting your own blog - they are not that expensive and if you need more disk space, more bandwidth etc, it is not that hard to just back up your site and move it to a new host.

I have seen so many people lose their blogs just by having free hosting.To avoid starting from square one is to have paid hosting and taking a back up once in a while.
