Keep On Track By Following Your Own Business Plan!
October 4, 2007 by Tom Lindstrom
It is safe to say that 95% of all successful businesses today, have started out with a functional business plan. Those who became successful stuck to the business plan, and others exceeded their foreseen success by tweaking the plan as time went by. By following your business plan it is easier to keep on track, but some changes to the plan can be required when there are changes in areas that affect your business.
You should consider your business plan as a road map.You started at the beginning point and the business plan showed the desired destination, and the route you had to take to achieve that goal. You followed established time lines and were able to estimate how long it would take to get to each point on the map and by following this map you could stay on line to reach your destination in the prescribed time.
It is possible that you may be forced to take another direction along the road, if you run into unexpected problems that you can not solve. By taking a look at your business plan you can determine where you are and where you want to be in the future. Perhaps you need to plot the course with different directions in order to reach your goal in the end.You may have to adjust the time of when you are estimated to reach your goal, if the new route is slower.
A business plan is no different from that map as unexpected things happen that may throw your business off its course and new direction will have to be plotted. Most business plans are established with time lines of one, two five, 10 and more years in advance, and usually count on the status quo to establish their goals along the way. It may be quite easy to reach some of the goals, but something unexpected can turn up which will cause a need for change.
While your business plan will help keep you on track to hit specific goals, keep in mind that you plan is written on paper and is not carved in stone. You have all the white out you could possibly need and shouldn´t be afraid to use it.
Mistakes happen along the way in business and there will be many bumps in the road that may slow you down. Reworking your business plan as the years go on will help you meet some of your original goals as well as establish new ones. Even if it may seem hopeless sometimes, keep on track by following your own business plan, if not the original then the new one!
